New Cooke Young Scholars Learn to Think Big at Welcome Weekend 2016

Last weekend, the Cooke Foundation brought together all 70 of our new Cooke Young Scholars and their families to the Johns Hopkins University campus. These rising high school freshman enter the Young Scholars Program as our fifteenth cohort, and traveled from all over the nation to join us for Welcome Weekend.

We’ve included some of our favorite photos and social media posts below to capture this first opportunity for students to meet other high-achieving peers from families with financial need, and come together as part of the Cooke Scholar community.

Throughout day one, Cooke Young Scholars and their families arrived at Johns Hopkins University.

After meeting up with their educational advisers, Cooke Young Scholars and their families got to know one another through a few icebreaker games. A group of current scholars, alumni, and their families joined our educational advisers in welcoming a new cohort to the Cooke Scholar community.

On day two, Cooke Young Scholars learned about Individualized Learning Plans and then dined at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Cooke Scholar William Tarpeh used his keynote to describe how his interests developed throughout the foundation’s programs and eventually became his research focus as a PhD student at the University of California, Berkeley. Following his speech, William presented new Cooke Young Scholar Samuel Park with the Matthew J. Quinn Youth Leadership Award.

Cooke Young Scholars worked as teams on day three’s scavenger hunt, and then ended the day by sharing their passions in a talent show.
