Grantee Spotlight: Peabody Institute

Peabody

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation grantee, the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, provides outstanding arts instruction through Peabody Preparatory, Baltimore’s premier community school for the performing arts. Based upon the idea that every “individual has the capacity for artistic expression at some appropriate level of understanding and skill,” the school is open to gifted children and adolescents, as well as any community members interested in music and dance education.

To ensure that limited financial means are not a barrier to participating in Peabody Preparatory, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation supported the creation of Pathways to Peabody, a generous scholarship program, through a Widening the Stage grant. Pathways to Peabody provides approximately 35 musically talented students ages 12-17 from low- to lower-middle-income families financial aid to study in one of Peabody Preparatory’s five academies for jazz, piano, vocals, strings, or woodwind, brass, and percussion performance. These students receive high-quality musical instruments, training in study programs with a rigorous curriculum, and performance opportunities to cultivate and deepen their musicianship.
