From Cote d'Ivoire to Texas Tech: Cooke Scholar Jean-Christian Guiton

Before he applied to the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, Jean-Christian Guiton balanced working and interning alongside his studies at North Lake College. This fall, he is transferring to Texas Tech University to study civil engineering.

“Thankfully, through that struggle I had the help of my family,” says Jean-Christian. “I’m not letting them down, and I’m proceeding towards accomplishing my goals.”

Jean-Christian explains that he developed a passion for civil engineering while working with his father, an architect from Cote d’Ivoire.

“It’s starting with that raw thought and then turning it into something concrete,” he says. “If I could do anything, I would open my own consulting firm in engineering, just because I would love to use all the expertise and all the knowledge that I will get through college to help benefit my community.”

As a Cooke Scholar, Jean-Christian will receive up to $40,000 per year to complete his bachelor’s degree, along with opportunities for internships, study abroad, and graduate school funding.
