Acting to Change the World: Cooke Scholar John Johnson

John Johnson began his undergraduate studies at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York. Although he initially considered pursuing a science degree, John realized a strong passion for the performing arts.

“When I’m on stage inhabiting a character or someone else’s life, I’m about to connect with the audience. And draw them into someone else’s life and that helps me to connect with myself and with other people,” says John.

Now he’s taking that passion to New York University, and majoring in acting with a Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

As a Cooke Scholar, John will receive up to $40,000 per year to complete his bachelor’s degree, along with opportunities for internships, study abroad, and graduate school funding. He has also been able to connect with a diverse community of other Cooke Scholars and alumni.

“They are overcoming these huge challenges and it inspires me. To see that they are going to different universities and different things so that way they can create change in the world in different ways. And it will continue to inspire me, I think, for the rest of my life.”

Community college students, don’t miss this opportunity! The deadline to apply is October 24, 2017.
