9 Unexpected Honors of Our Undergraduate Transfer Scholars

Our Undergraduate Transfer Scholars represent a diverse and talented group of individuals. When you gather them in a single room some pretty interesting stories begin to emerge. At Scholars Weekend this year, we discovered a few remarkable accomplishments that might not have made it onto their college resumes.

The Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest private scholarship for outstanding community college students with financial need to transfer to and complete their bachelor’s degrees at the nation’s top four-year colleges and universities. This 2015 cohort includes students who, in addition to being Cooke Scholars, have also achieved the following notable achievements:

1. Sailed around the world dressed as a pirate
2. Became a Buddhist monk
3. Parenthood — and one scholar also balances her studies as a grandparent!
4. Former tank commander
5. Recently engaged to be married
6. Frequent cosplay as a dwarf in gold chainmail
7. Falling out of a mango tree
8. Studying at the hospital where he and his quintuplet siblings were born
9. Rounded up chickens with a sheepdog

Scholars Weekend is a unique event hosted by the Cooke Foundation to bring our scholarship recipients together with educational leaders for workshops, peer networking, and learning to make the most of the collegiate experience.
