2014 Summer Learning Day

sld_buttonToday is National Summer Learning Day, which was created to spread awareness about the importance of creating quality learning opportunities for youth during summer while most students are on break.

The National Summer Learning Association reports that summer learning is important for our nation’s youth to help close the achievement gap and supports healthy development in communities all across the country.

Research has shown that summer learning loss occurs during summer break, leaving teachers to re-teach the previous year’s skills at the beginning of a new school year. High-quality summer learning programs can prevent summer learning loss and even produce gains for students.

Not surprisingly, students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have less access to quality summer learning programs. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is proud to support summer programs for low- to moderate-income students through our grantmaking efforts. Here are a few summer programs that are worth noting:
