10 edX Learners Become Cooke Young Scholars

JKCF and edX Scholarship ChallengeEach year, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program selects exceptionally promising students with financial need to receive our comprehensive educational advising and financial support from the 8th grade through high school. The program allows talented students to access summer academic and enrichment programs, internships, study abroad opportunities, and technology that otherwise would not have been financially feasible for their families. Each Cooke Young Scholar also has their own educational adviser to guide, advocate, coach, and tailor opportunities to meet the student’s aspirations.

Seeking to broaden our reach outside of traditional recruitment channels, last year the Cooke Foundation partnered with edX, the nonprofit online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT, to create a unique and exciting challenge for applicants. Eligible 7th-grade students who completed at least one of five selected edX courses earned the distinction as Cooke Young Scholars semi-finalists in our competitive application process.

Among nearly 2,000 applicants, 600 students were semi-finalists. We are pleased to announce that 10 applicants successfully completed one of edX’s online college-level courses and are among our new cohort of Cooke Young Scholars this year. Read edX’s celebratory blog post to learn more about these accomplished and enthusiastic learners.
